Katowice is the best city to live in
Journalists from Polska Dziennik Zachodni have studied the standard of living in
the capital cities of 16 provinces. After adding up the results, it turned out that Katowice came first in this ranking.
The research analyses detailed data concerning the level of unemployment, prices of public transport tickets, number of places in kindergartens and rental rates in council flats.
As it turned out, the chief asset of the city is the still developing cultural offer.
In Katowice the greatest emphasis is put on cultural centres which are located close to people. In this city there is one community centre per 10,000 inhabitants, whilst in Warszawa per almost four times as much. Katowice is also first when it comes to the number of libraries and access to them.
Other advantages of the capital city of the Silesian Province are good infrastructure, very low level of unemployment and relatively cheap services. Apart from that, Katowice has a well developed road and railway network and rental rates for council flats are among the lowest in Poland. Moreover, the level of health care and education in Silesia belongs to the highest in Poland.
Andrzej Sadowski, the Vice-President of the Adam Smith Centre, says that the ranking shows how much has been recently done in Katowice in order to make the inhabitants’ lives easier. The newspaper journalists followed the rankings popular in the United States. People thinking about moving to another city very often analyse these rankings carefully and on their basis make decisions about the new place of residence.
