Silesian Stadium like Wembley

The prestige of the Silesian Stadium is growing together with the chances of organising Euro 2012 there. As Gazeta Wyborcza reports, the Polish Football Association decided that the final matches of the Polish Cup will take place in Chorzów.
In England, the most important national matches are organised every year at the same stadium.
The English national stadium – the Wembley Stadium – is the place where the final of the English Cup has been taking place since 1923. The situation will be similar in Poland, where, according to the decision of the Polish Football Association, the Polish Cup will be held every year at the Silesian Stadium.

There are more similarities between the Wembley Stadium and the Silesian Stadium. In 2003, the former was completely refurbished (the old facility was demolished and a new one was erected) and now it is one of the most modern sports facilities in the world. The stadium in Chorzów will be redeveloped as well, in the years 2009 to 2011. The redevelopment will include not only buildinga roof, but also partial demolition of the outdated western stand, which will be replaced with a new, bigger one. As a result, the Silesian Stadium will seat as many as 51.5 thousand spectators.

The total cost of modernisation of the Chorzów stadium will be PLN 360 million, i.e. PLN 110 million more than it was originally planned.

Organising the Polish Cup final at the Silesian Stadium will raise the prestige of both the matches and the facility. Thanks to the large outlays on the modernisation, we may assume that the chances of watching the greatest football stars in Chorzów during the Euro 2012 championships are growing.
