Pyrzowice: new terminal for Euro 2012
As Gazeta Wyborcza reports, the Management Board of the Pyrzowice airport has already signed preliminary agreements on subsidies for the extension
of the airport. The new terminal is a great chance for Silesia to gain more significance as a region.
The plans include, among other things, building a new terminal and a new cargo base, as well as transforming the present runway into a taxiing area.
Every month, since the beginning of 2008, the Pyrzowice airport beats the last year’s records concerning the number of the checked-in passengers. In July, the number reached over 300 thousand, 27 per cent more than last year. These results were one of the reasons why the representatives of the Silesian Air Society (Górnośląskie Towarzystwo Lotnicze), managing the airport, have signed the so-called pre-agreements with the Centre of the EU Transport Projects (Centrum Unijnych Projektów Transportowych) on subsidies for the modernisation and extension of the airport.
One third of the money needed for the investment – PLN 254 million – will come from the EU subsidies. The rest will be means from a bank loan and the contribution of the shareholders, including, among others, the Silesian Province and Węglokoks.
The new terminal will provide services for 5 million passengers per year, which, together with the existing terminal, makes 9 million passengers. Increasing the capabilities of the airport will facilitate the communications with our region. It is especially important with regard to the Euro 2012 championships and the fact that more and more foreign companies place their seats in Silesia.
