Businessmen to land in the centre of Katowice
As Gazeta Wyborcza reports, works on construction of a city airport have started in Katowice. It will replace the sports airport in Muchowiec, located near the city centre.
Works involving the levelling of the airstrip, affected by mining damage, have already begun. The development of the city airport will begin in 2010.
The new airstrip, 1200 metres long and 30 metres wide, together with the infrastructure and lighting will cost approximately PLN 35 million. The resources for the development will come from the budgets of the city and the province, as well as from the EU funds and a loan.
The preparation of the aeronautical analysis has allowed for the modernisation and development of the Muchowiec sports airport. The document defines precisely the development plan of Katowice.
The Muchowiec city airport will not compete with the Pyrzowice airport, but rather supplement it. It will be another asset for the Agglomeration in the organisation of Euro 2012 – the European football championships – and also a big facility for the increasing number of businessmen who come to Katowice by “air taxis”, mainly from abroad.
The airport is designed mainly for private, light airplanes. The airline jets of the regular air traffic will still be landing in Pyrzowice, 30 kilometres from Katowice.
