The redevelopment of the centre of Katowice will begin in 2010
Gazeta Wyborcza reports that the area around Korfantego Avenue will be turned into a large construction site in as soon as two years. At the press conference held on Wednesday, 9th July, the Mayor of Katowice Piotr Uszok presented plans concerning the most significant investment in Katowice.
The project to rebuild the city centre was already chosen by the city authorities in the year 2006. It was then that the design by an architect from Katowice – Tomasz Konior – won the tender. The concept behind the design is to develop Korfantego Avenue and arrange the main city square in front of the Silesian Theatre.
The Mayor has announced that the past two years have been dedicated to public discussions with the citizens of Katowice and investors, and also to settling matters related to plot ownership. This year, however, preparatory works will commence, including demolition of the Register Office building at Korfantego Avenue, the seat of which will be moved to Wolności Square.
A plenipotentiary for the city centre redevelopment has been appointed, and a contract engineer will be chosen in a month’s time. In the upcoming weeks the Municipal Council will also send offers to leading developers interested in investing in the new centre of Katowice.
The redevelopment of the city centre will involve enormous expenses. Therefore, Katowice will have to incur a debt to the European Investment Bank to the amount of at least EUR 100 million. These financial resources will be primarily allotted to modernisation of tram lines and investments within the borders of the city.
As announced by the Mayor of Katowice, first excavators will enter the city centre in the year 2010 at the very latest with the result that at first a section and then the whole of Korfantego Avenue will be closed off.
