The Miarki Square as the new marketplace of Katowice?
The originators of modernisation of this part of the city were Wojciech Małecki and Joanna Małecka, running their own architectonic studio in Katowice. They draw our attention to the special character of the south part of the downtown. It is this part that has a chance to become a district of artists, galleries and cafés.
The architects suggest covering the square with an even surface and putting in its central place a glass-covered pavilion in the shape of a slender cone with a café inside. The square would be closed to road traffic and only tramcars could go through it.
The plan also involves building a shopping centre and a car park under the square. As a result, the prices of the properties in the direct neighbourhood would rise and private investors would start purchasing and modernising the old tenement houses.
The architects have prepared the design free of charge and have sent it to the Municipal Office, which promised to analyse it, with the reservation that the suggestion to reduce the greenery in the square may not be popular with the public.
