The future of Katowice in the hands of top architects

Gazeta Wyborcza informs about the creation of the Institute of Modern City in Katowice, which is the first initiative of this kind in Poland. Architects, artists and scientists will discuss here the problems and the future of the city.
The Institute was created on 02nd April during a meeting in the atrium of the Academy of Music in Katowice. The project is a joint initiative of architects, musicians, artists, sociologists and politicians connected with the capital of the province. Among those invited to the Institute, which is inspired by similar organisations operating in Basel and Barcelona, were the famous sculptor Jarosław Kozakiewicz, director Magdalena Piekorz and Marian Oslislo, the rector of the Academy of Fine Arts.

The Institute is to serve as a venue for discussing revitalisation of the city centre and improvement of quality of life and space in Katowice. The authors’ objective is to bring out the potential of the city and its residents. There will be series of lectures and exhibitions aimed at educating the society.

One of the creators of the Institute is Tomasz Konior, winner of the contest for the project to redevelop the centre of Katowice. Piotr Uszok, the Mayor of Katowice, is willing to cooperate with the organisation.

The Institute organises the Forum of Modern City in May. The conference, devoted to the redevelopment of the centre of Katowice and to the emerging metropolis, will be visited by foreign architects and investors, such as Kengo Kuma, the most famous Japanese architect, and urban planners from Holland, Italy and Austria.
