Modern surroundings of Spodek
According to Gazeta Wyborcza, the Municipal Office in Katowice will announce two international architecture contests in the forthcoming weeks. The winners will design the International Congress Centre and a new building of the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice, which will be located in the near vicinity of Spodek.
City planning assumes development of empty surface area behind Spodek, which is what remains of the former Katowice Coal Mine. The decision that a new Silesian Museum will be erected amongst the historic mine buildings was taken already some time ago.
This project will be implemented by Austrian architects.
It has been also decided that the International Congress Centre and a new building of the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra Katowice will be built on the remaining part of this area. The former property will consist of several halls of different size and it will be linked to Spodek, which – during big congresses – is going to become
an integral part of the centre. The results of the contest, prepared by the Union of Polish Architects in Katowice, will be known in September and the construction cost is estimated at 200 million zloty.
At the same time, there is going to be an architecture contest for a design of a new seat of the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra Katowice, which will be located between Olimpijska Street and the new Silesian Museum. The present seat is situated in the Silesian Centre of Culture; however, during big concerts there are not enough seats for the audience and musicians complain about acoustics. The new building will cost 120 million zloty and it has a big chance of being subsidised by the European Union and the government.
The city also wants a building of opera and ballet to be erected next to the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra Katowice. However, the first project implemented between Spodek and Bogucicki Park will be the Silesian Museum which is meant to be completed in 2012.
