Muchowiec Airport: green light for skyscrapers

Over the last weeks Gazeta Wyborcza has reported on problems related to the construction of high buildings in Katowice.

Over the last weeks Gazeta Wyborcza has reported on problems related to the construction of high buildings in Katowice. Until recently, such properties could not be built in the city centre because of planes taking off and landing at the Muchowiec sports airport. The location of the airport prevented the construction of office buildings at Roździeńskiego Avenue and at Olimpijska and Opolska Streets.

The problem was that the city did not have the so-called aeronautic study, on the basis of which the Civil Aviation Office issues permits for building high-rise properties.
Now the document is ready. The centre of Katowice has been divided into two zones.
In the first zone, covering the area from the A4 motorway to the railway tracks in the city centre, it will be possible to erect 100-metre-high buildings.

The other zone, where 200-metre-high buildings can be built now, encompasses the very centre of the city, between the railway tracks in the south and the Koszutka district in the north. The whole city centre has been marked as “extensive obstacle area”, i.e. area where skyscrapers can be erected.

The new study must be approved by the Civil Aviation Office. Authorities of Katowice support the development of the Muchowiec Airport. The city wants to spend LN 10 million for extension of the airport this year. The whole investment will cost about PLN 25 million. The developing city of Katowice needs a business airport for smaller aeroplanes.
