Billions for Katowice

The Mayor of Katowice Piotr Uszok has presented an investment plan of the local authorities. The ambitious goals for the next few years include: extensive rebuilding of the city centre, constructing a sewage system in all districts, creating a congress centre, modernising Spodek and introducing further changes in the road system.
Modernisation of the sewage system in Katowice, the biggest undertaking from this list and the biggest project of this type in Poland, will cost 1 billion zlotys, from which 636 million will be spent on the first stage – 400 km of a new sewage system. The work will start in 2009.

Another major undertaking underway is the rebuilding of the city centre. When the winner of the contest for a concept of changes was selected in Autumn 2006, the technical research was initiated together with the collection of all documents. A part of the rebuilding of the centre is modernisation of the railway station and the office building owned by the Polish National Railway (PKP). PKP is negotiating with potential investors as the buildings are to be modernised by 2011.

Spodek, a pride of Katowice and the biggest event and sports hall in Poland, will change by 2010. This year work worth of 12.5 million zlotys (including mainly air-conditioning and ventilation systems) is going to be conducted there. Next year further modernisation will cost approximately 50 million zlotys, coming mostly from  the EU resources. After the modernisation, the building, which will have a new front as well, will be of higher standard. Next to it a big congress centre, worth of nearly 200 million zlotys, will be created. The organisational preparations for its construction are taking place right now.

A new building of the Silesian Museum will also be erected in this part of the city, on the premises of Katowice coal mine. Apart from that, the construction of the new seat of the National Symphonic Orchestra of the Polish Radio will begin (over 120 million zlotys).

Other investment projects important for the city which are to be realised within the next few years include:
- construction of the Academic Information Centre of the University of Silesia and the University of Economics for approximately 60 million zlotys,
- modernisation of the Pałac Młodzieży for approximately 50 million zlotys,
- investing in the tramway infrastructure – nearly 175 million zlotys,
- modernisation of the road system, connected with the change of the route of the National Road No. 81 to Wisła, for over 300 million zlotys,
- construction of an aquapark for over 200 million zlotys,
The local authorities also support the development of housing industry.
