Silesia starts promoting its tourist attractions

Soon Ruda Śląska, Zabrze or Gliwice will stop being only the towns passed right by the motorway.

They will become the important stops on the Technology Monuments Route, which was officially opened on Thursday.

Such route could come into being only in Silesia, in the most industrialized region of the country. We have much to boast, but we haven't benefited so far from the potential which has been hidden in historic industrial plants. The Technology Monuments Route will change our look at the region. We will discover some astonishing objects - says Adam Hajduga, main specialist in the department promotion of region, tourism and sport in the Silesian Marshal Office.

Officials and specialists from the Silesian Cultural Heritage singled out 100 most interesting objects. Then, there was the process of selection - some of them were not safe enough, other were too inaccessible and many of them did not have the needed tourist infrastructure.

Finally, the route has been formed with 29 places, including famous tourist attractions, e.g. the Queen Luiza Monumental Coal Mine or Brewing Museum in Tychy. However, many of them will only now come into tourists' awareness, e.g. Ficinus housing estate in Ruda Śląska or Firefighting Museum in Mysłowice.

The most remote places are 100 km away, but the majority is located in the agglomeration. The Route will be dedicated mainly for those travelling by car, soon there will be white and dark blue signs on the roads encouraging drivers to exit the motorway and to enter a historic mine, to visit workers' housing estate or brewery with tradition. Big information boards with historic descriptions, most important information and a map of the whole route have already appeared by the objects.

The Technology Monuments Route will be the most recognizable tourist product in Poland. It becomes a part of the way of thinking about tourism, it forms a complex offer - says Tomasz Majka, vice-chairman of the Polish Tourism Development Agency.

Tomasz Stemplewski, the head of promotion department of the Marshal Office adds: The time of heavy industry has already gone by, now the chance for Silesia is built by tourist industry. We have unique objects which can attract tourists. The Route will provide many work places. The former mine will employ guides who will be introducing the visitors to the work of miners.

The Route has an open formula, so it will motivate the present administrators to take care of better conditions of the buildings or to create facilities such as gift shops and car parks for guests. In return, they can count on the promotion. So far the Marshal Office has spent PLN 200.000 for this project.
