New terminal at the Katowice Pyrzowice Airport

A new terminal at the Katowice Pyrzowice Airport was opened on Monady, 9 July. After the expansion done three years ago, the area of the passenger terminal equaled 7.6 thousand sq meters.

The new hall has got three levels. Level 0 houses arrival hall (operating since yesterday), check-in desks and departure hall – still closed as security systems are being tested there. Level 1 is a retail part where passengers can find a florist\'s, a restaurant, a book shop, a pharmacy and other shops. Level 2 with a waiting lounge for the passengers, has also got an observation deck, the longest one in Poland - of 180 meters. Yesterday one could use it for free, normally the entrance fee will be PLN 1.

The number of check-in desks has grown from 17 to 35, that is why the airport can offer its services to 1200 passengers per hour, which makes the total annual number of 3.5 mln passengers. It is twice as much as before. This year 2 mln passengers will fly via Pyrzowice.

- If the growth retains its pace, the current area of the terminal will not be enough for a long time - says Kazimierz Kubik, manager of the terminal. That is why we think of another expansion. A new general plan of the airport which will indicate the development directions has to be ready by the end of this year. The future terminal will not be adjacent to the existing one, but it will be erected in a totally new place, i.e. towards the east. The project of the future terminal will be chosen via an international competition.
